I'm big fan of co-op gaming. Adversarial is fine, but I'm more into story telling. So if you can do so with a coop rule set all the better.
The book cover, print on demand, showed up in a week! |
When Snarling Badger Studios revealed their new game Space Station Zero on August 26th, I had to have it. It's a skirmish game with solo, coop, and adversarial rules, and it all takes place on a mysterious space station you've found yourself drawn to. My buddy and I immediately started planning to play a game, and then coincidently the hard copy showed up on September 2nd. So we gave it a go:
The game is really straight forward: everything is a challenge and your stats plus gear determine the number of dice you get to roll. Evens are a success, odds are not. There's more too it like critical successes and failures; but it's an easy rule set to learn. Solo/Coop scenarios are all in the book and take branching paths for re-playability. The game is also quick, since we played three scenarios in under three hours (all on our first outing!)
So not wanting to waste an opportunity, I rolled up some coop crews for my buddy and I and we exploring. I brought Captain Mogran and crew of 9, while my buddy brought his 7 man crew of alien sentient slime parasites. We figure the slime captain hired the Orks for their muscles as they explored.
Entry zone for the room. 'Er we go! |
Turns out the first room needed more skill than muscle. Not only did the two crews fail to clear the room, but the orks took some serious damage. In the end Runt was permanently injured, Shakbag had to sit out the next game to rest, and Figgrot had died. The slime crew, questioning their choice in companions, retreated to lick their wounds, but was no worse for ware.
Looking at our mistakes, but changing nothing, we figured it was just the luck of the draw. The two crews choose a different entry point and tried again. This time they were much more successful and quickly passed the challenges and moved onto the second room with only minor injuries.
For our third room we hit all sorts of challenges. Angry mutants charged us while auto tracking turrets started firing. It was a rough go and the Orks took a couple of good hits. Shakbag the goblin was an MVP firing off his pistol without looking... but the real star was the Slime Crew's soldier who wouldn't back down from a whole mob of mutants. He took them down one by one giving the rest of his crew time to secure the remainder of the objectives.
I need to paint more terrain to use inside the space station... |
In the end, the orks are down two of their crew as poor Runt was killed off by mutants. I'm not sure if they'll make their way through to uncover the mysteries of the station. Perhaps the Slime crew will keep them alive long enough to discover something. Only one thing is for certain: after falling through the floor there's no way back. It's time for Death or Glory!
I encourage you to check out this game! A great pickup game that's easy to learn and play. Looking forward to more adventures soon!
Hum, looks interesting! The art form the cover just got me in :D
ReplyDeleteLooks like it's easy to learn and play, that's precisely the kind of stuff I need!
One of the writers runs Tabletop Minions. He's all about getting people into the hobby and making it less daunting by showing hobby and painting shortcuts. So I knew this game would be easy to learn to help hook more people. The fact that it's coop makes it even easier. You can fumble through the rules together!
DeleteThat sounds cool. I'm always interested by solo/co-op games, and this sounds like a good simple one. Have you ever played Hardwired? That might be worth a look.
ReplyDeleteI've tried to get into Stargrave coop, and have Rangers of Shadowdeep which I have yet to play. Space is my preferred setting, and playing with someone is much more relaxing than against them. This was just a great mix, and fairly in-expensive too!
DeleteI haven't heard of Hardwired, but I'll check it out.
I was considering checking this game out myself, after reading this now I have to!
ReplyDeleteThat's great! I'd be interested to see what delves your crews would embark upon!
DeleteAwesome looking game!
ReplyDeleteI remember watching the video over on youtube where the writer was talking about it but hadn't given it much thought until now!
I watch TabletopMinions aka Uncle Atom, and I have their last game. So I was planning to pick it up. Didn't know we'd get into it this quick though.
DeleteHobbs, they should give you a kickback - I just ordered my copy! Thanks for putting it on my radar - can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteJust happy to support small publishing. The big guys get enough money.
